In the first half of 2004, NEC chooses Mainland China and Hong Kong markets to sell some trend
leading mobile phones. These include the powder compact style N910, and the world thinnest credit
card size N900. NEC spokesman in Hong Kong said the N900 would not be produced in a large scale,
and the initial price was around US$1140. We prepared a mega gallery on NEC N900. You will know
how good of that premium phone is
The thinnest phone
NEC N900 is a very slim credit card size phone. The specification shows that the thickness is
only 8.6mm, and the weight is 70 grams. This is the world thinnest mobile phone up to now.
According to NEC, N900 is the product by the joint forces of NEC Japan and NEC Mobile Terminals
Development Center in Beijing. The sliver and metal feel create premium feeling. In the front
side of the handset, the largest part is the color screen. It uses TFT 65000 colors display, with
1.8 inch and 120 x 160 pixels resolution. The remaining part is the keypad. The menu keys are
missing to reduce the size. In the backside, a very clean design is shown. An embedded camera,
little mirror for self-portrait photos and a photo light are located in the right hand corner,
with a circle surrounding. A big NEC logo is shown. The pure design is very similar to Casio
EXILIM EX-S3 digital camera.
Extra Battery Cradle
Because NEC N900 is too thinnest, it does not include a speaker. Users have to use the handsfree
to achieve the voice call. Also, it uses internal 300 mAH lion battery. In order to increase the
standby time, NEC offers an extra battery cradle. Users can plugin it in for more standby time.
The cradle is also the data transmitting and charger port. Users cannot do that without the
cradle.

"Multi Media Card"
The small phone is not only for decoration. It includes many must-have multimedia features for
latest mobile phones. The thinnest body comes with a VGA camera, capable to take VGA standard
still photos. With photo light, users can enjoy taking photos in the dark night. NEC N900 support
GPRS, MMS and 40 chords polyphonic ring tones. With data cable, pictures, photos and ring tones
can be exchanged through the dedicated PC software. NEC N900 also supports OTA graphics and ring
tones download services. The handset includes 2M memory for storage in our trial sample.
The actual usage
The NEC N900 we tried is not the full and retail version. We cannot offer a full test report. But
we can also express some first trial feeling. The menu is inherited from other NEC color display
handset. The navigation is logical. Without the menu key, users have to press a key to swap
between the number keypad and the navigation keypad. We feel lost in the trial period, and hard
to confirm the change of the features. The camera in return is extremely easy to use. The stutter
key is located at the topside. Press it once can activate the camera. The screen from NEC is well
reputed. It also applies to the NEC N900. The screen can show very bright and clear colors even
to show the live pictures. Using the handsfree to achieve voice call is somewhat trouble. Also,
the bulky handsfree plug also degrades the whole handset design.
The Packing
NEC Hong Kong said they would offer full packing of NEC N900 including a battery, a battery
cradle, car kit charger, and handsfree kit. The phone is for China and Hong Kong market first,
but the handset includes English as menu option.
